A funding announcement at town hall this morning offered great news for upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant in Yarmouth.

MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS/HOUSING--Water Supply, Wastewater Upgrades for Yarmouth County

Upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant in Yarmouth and water tower in the Municipality of Argyle will enhance operations and support future growth in the area.

“Southwest Nova Scotia is a great place to live and work. We need robust municipal services if we want to build more homes and help businesses grow,” said Service Nova Scotia Minister Colton LeBlanc, MLA for Argyle, on behalf of John Lohr, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Improving water and wastewater systems will ensure we have the infrastructure needed to grow this beautiful part of our province.”

In Yarmouth, funding will support design work and upgrades needed to the electrical, mechanical and structural systems to enhance the treatment plant’s environmental performance and increase its capacity.

Total investment in the project is more than $1.9 million, with the Province and the Town of Yarmouth each contributing $991,325.

The Province also recently provided $750,000 to the Municipality of Argyle to repair and replace parts of a water tower in East Pubnico. The tank is the direct source of water for the local fire department and will help maintain fire protection for local residents, mitigate critical health and safety risks resulting from potential failure, and provide service to a major fish processing plant.

The projects are part of the Municipal Capital Growth Program, a one-time $102-million investment in projects across Nova Scotia – a historic provincial investment in municipal infrastructure.
