The Planning and Development Department provides the link between how land is used, where development happens and how our community responds and thrives as a result.
Development in the Town of Yarmouth
Land-use planning enables the Town to establish both long and short-term goals for growth and development, while considering social, economic, and environmental implications. Through certain planning processes, interest and objectives of individual property owners are balanced with the greater interests and objectives of the Town. The Planning Department must be contacted prior to the commencement of any development in the Town of Yarmouth, be it a residential deck addition or a large multi-unit commercial or residential development.
The department manages all aspects of planning and development including preparation of long-range plans, processing of rezoning applications, development agreement applications, subdivision applications, civic addressing, building and development permits, in-house mapping services, zoning certificates and by-law enforcement of minimum housing standards and dangerous or unsightly properties.
The Planner provides reports and recommendations on planning matters to the Planning Advisory Committee (PAC). In turn, the PAC advises Council on the preparation, amendment, or revision of planning documents.
The Planning and Development Team consists of the Director, Planner, Development Officer, Building Inspector, By-law Enforcement Officer, GIS Technician and Administrative Assistant.
Good Planning helps a community set goals about how it will grow and develop, and to work out ways of reaching those goals, while keeping important social, economic and environmental concerns in mind.
The pdf Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) (8.86 MB) , pdf Land Use By-law (LUB) (15.05 MB) and pdf Subdivision By-law (SDB) (4.12 MB) are the primary planning tools used by Nova Scotian municipalities to plan and design communities.
