‘Tis (almost) the Season: Winter Parking Regulations and Snow Clearing Reminders
As November comes to a close, the Town of Yarmouth wishes to remind residents and visitors of some very important snow-clearing reminders and winter parking rules that begin on Thursday, December 1st. Keeping the streets clear, safe, and accessible after a snowfall is a top priority of our public works crews, but we need vehicle owners to do their part, and follow these rules when parking within the Town of Yarmouth:
- No parking on the street between the hours of one o’clock in the morning and seven o’clock in the morning of the same day.
- Don't park or leave a vehicle (attended or unattended) on the streets that might interfere with or obstruct snow removal or winter maintenance operations.
- Don't park on any street during the period from one hour after a snowstorm has begun to two hours after the storm has stopped.
Any vehicle interfering with snow removal or winter maintenance activities is subject to ticketing and/or removal. For complete details on winter parking regulations, please go to Snow Plowing.
Snow Clearing Reminders
Our Public Works Department is responsible for making streets and sidewalks safe and accessible for pedestrians and properly equipped vehicles. We provide snow and ice control for a number of areas within the town, including roughly 68 kilometres of streets, 50 kilometres of sidewalks, a number of parking lots, and a number of public buildings. During a storm, please be patient and, if possible, please stay off the roads until snow clearing has taken place. This makes it easier for plow operators and lessens the potential burden on emergency responders.
When Does Plowing Start?
Plowing of the streets begins after an accumulation of 10 cm of snow, depending upon the conditions (i.e. wet snow, drifting, and at the discretion of the Public Works Department). It will continue until the storm has subsided. Under ideal circumstances, we will wait until after a storm has subsided before plowing, normally in the early morning hours. For blizzards or high-wind storms, plowing will not commence until the storm has subsided.
Sidewalks
After the streets have been plowed, our team focuses on clearing the sidewalks. This generally starts only after a storm has finished, and sidewalks are not plowed if blustering or drifting conditions exist. Sidewalks on main thoroughfares and around schools, the hospital, and other institutions are typically completed before we start working on side streets. After they've been plowed, the sidewalks may be sanded as required due to slippery conditions. However, not all sidewalks are cleared by the town! For more information, including YOUR responsibilities, go to Snow Removal.
Keep It Clean!
Any private contractors who are plowing snow onto and across public streets and/or sidewalks from private driveways and parking lots (and which causes an obstruction or encumbrance to the flow of vehicular or pedestrian traffic) shall be warned once. Any further offences will result in a summary offence ticket under our pdf Streets and Sidewalk By-law (174 KB) .
Stay Safe!
