Thursday, March 17th, 2021 - Yarmouth, N.S. – At a special town council meeting held virtually today, council unanimously passed two important motions that directly affect the reopening of the former YMCA facility at 275 Main Street.
As first recommended by the Bridge Committee and then approved by the Mariners Centre Expansion Steering Committee (MCESC) on Tuesday, council passed a motion that the Mariners Centre operate the bridge facility located at 275 Main Street. The motion also approved that funds recently allocated by the three municipal units are accessible to the Mariners Centre Management to develop a business plan and budget.
A second item on the agenda addressed a specific repair issue at the facility that needed to be immediately addressed. A recommendation was made to council to authorize the use of funds from the “Reopening of Former YMCA Facility” trust fund to replace the lights in the pool. The reason for dealing with this issue immediately is a matter a safety and practicality as the light installation is less risky when there is no water in the pool. Also, the lights required may be long-order items, and ordering at the earliest opportunity will ensure no delay in the reopening. The motion to approve the $6300 plus HST was passed.
“Once the MCESC approved having Mariners Centre lead the bridge, we didn’t hesitate to call this meeting the very next day to keep things moving”, said Mayor Mood. “As everyone knows, this council is all in for the reopening and we know that we can’t let meetings and process slow things down. Getting these types of issues around the reopening solved quickly will be a priority for our council moving forward”.
Speaking to the ability to quickly act on repairing the pool lights, Mayor Mood added "We are able to do this because of generous community members who too, want to see the facility reopened. This is what happens when community comes together!"
