Heritage
Purpose
Yarmouth protects and celebrates its built heritage — the houses, public buildings and waterfront structures that tell our town’s story.
Where we are Yarmouth is a historic seaport on Nova Scotia’s southwest shore, on the Bay of Fundy. Settled in 1761 by New England colonists, the town grew around homes, stores and churches built by those early families. Many descendants still live here — names such as Ellis, Perry, Crosby, Landers and Eldridge remain part of our community.
Why our buildings matter
During the age of sail, Yarmouth was one of the world’s busiest shipping towns. Wealth from that era shaped the distinctive architecture along our streets. Because the town never suffered a major fire, many historic buildings survive intact, showing styles from several centuries.
Highlights
- Collins Street Heritage District — ornate homes once owned by sea captains and merchants.
- Waterfront — historic features including the Milton clock tower and Killam Brothers Marina.
- South end — Old Yarmouth Academy and the site of the town’s first hospital.
