Volunteer Firefighting FAQs
Will I get paid?
You get an annual honorarium of about $3,000. The exact amount depends on how many calls you attend. Training and experience are free and can help you start a career as a paid first responder or medical professional. We also offer free gym memberships.
Do I need the experience to join?
No. We provide free training and give you time to develop skills using modern equipment. With training you’ll learn the right tools and techniques to fight fires safely. If you already have experience or qualifications, you may move faster through our certification process.
How much time do I have to devote as a volunteer?
Expect weekly training during your first year while you work toward Level 1 firefighter certification. After that, the team trains about every two weeks. Call volume varies — we are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
How old do I have to be?
You must be at least 19 years old. Applicants age 17 or 18 need parental consent.
Will equipment be provided to me?
Yes. All equipment used in training and on the job is provided free of charge.
Do I have to fight fires?
Yes — front-line firefighters enter buildings, fight fires, respond to motor vehicle collisions, and protect people and property. We also need volunteers for traffic control at incidents, fire safety education, and other roles. If you have a special skill, we will find a way to use it.
What’s the best way for me to learn more?
Fill out a short inquiry form on this website and check the “firefighter volunteer” box. We’ll send your name and address to the Fire Chief. A station representative will call you to discuss the role.
