In addition to a beautification award, the town has been awarded $25,000 toward the hiring of an Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Coordinator
Thursday, September 7th, 2023 - The Town of Yarmouth has again been awarded funding through the provincial Beautification and Street Program. The beautification funding, awarded by the Department of Municipal Affairs, is designed to help communities across the province create more inviting public spaces for citizens and to help attract visitors. This year, the town received a contribution of $18,066.00.
The town was also awarded funding through the Community Works Program, which creates job opportunities for youth and unemployed people, to gain skills and experience in their fields. From the program, the town is receiving $25,000.00 toward the hiring of a full-time Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Coordinator.
A great deal of work has been completed over the last two years by town staff and the Accessibility Advisory Committee to develop an Accessibility Action Plan. The hiring of a full-time Accessibility Coordinator will help to move that plan forward. The coordinator will be responsible for the development, implementation, and continuation of diversity and accessibility strategies, and ensuring inclusive and accessible principles are embedded within the town’s policies, programs, and services.
This year’s beautification award will help fund the refurbishing of downtown light pole fixtures. The project work is being overseen by the Town of Yarmouth's Operations/Parks department and involves scraping, painting, and replacement of the weathered Lexan panels, which will allow for better light diffusion. The total budget for the light fixture revitalization comes in at $36,130.70 and the grant award will help cover half the costs.
