An exciting unveiling took place on Sunday, November 14th at Doug Melanson Park.
A small group gathered for a first look at a new interpretive panel. The panel provides visitors with details on the park’s opening, as well as information on Doug Melanson, whom the park was named after. It also offers a history of two schools that stood in the park location beginning in 1865 and a summary of information on the Milton Improvement Society. The society led the way in the park's development, which opened in 2019.
Speakers at the unveiling included Jean Clulee and David Sollows from the Doug Melanson Park Committee, Mayor Pam Mood, Carol Weir and Reverend Bill Newell. Also in attendance were the children of Kit (Cann/Peters) Lockhart. Their generous donation, along with a donation from the Yarmouth Dental Group in memory of Imrich Kiraly, provided the funds for the construction of the panel.
The park is a symbol of a successful partnership between the Town of Yarmouth and the community. The town provided funding for landscaping work to build the park and offered an easy method of donating through its Community Asset Donation Program. Combined with the efforts of many volunteers, the funds needed for the completion of the beautiful new green space came together quickly.
