W. Laurence Sweeney Fisheries Museum Interpreters

The Town of Yarmouth is accepting applications for Museum Interpreters for the W. Laurence Sweeney Fisheries Museum.

1 Student - May to August -  Part-time
1 Seasonal - May to October - Full-time

In this role you will share the history of one of the most significant fishing and shipping enterprises in Southwest Nova Scotia.   You will assist the public in their exploration of the Sweeney marine heritage through unique exhibits, including a simulation of a traditional fishing wharf, complete with fishing, processing and ship repair sheds, wharf decks and a coastal freighter. Your previous experience working in tourism, hospitality or a museum setting, along with your excellent interpersonal and communication skills will assist you in not only sharing your knowledge of the Fisheries Museum but also the other tourism and cultural attractions in our area.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience working in tourism, retail sales, hospitality, or other visitor service employment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, volunteers and visitors
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Proficient with computers and social media platforms
  • Must be strongly orientated towards serving the public
  • Must exhibit a genuine interest in our community and the history of our marine heritage

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Welcoming visitors to the Museum and provide a positive customer experience
  • Share the history of the W. Laurence Sweeney Fisheries Museum
  • Collection of admission fees
  • Daily record keeping related to sales and admission activity
  • Provide individual tours as well as coordination of larger group tours
  • Balance cash and make deposits
  • Daily general cleaning duties
  • Ensure the museum exhibits and displays are maintained in proper order
  • Respond to various inquiries from visitors related to the museum and/or other local attractions
  • Ensure visitors are respectful of each other and the displays
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Policies of the Town of Yarmouth
