Emergency Preparedness; Key Facts & Reminders

Please read more for some key facts & reminders from the Town of Yarmouth ahead of the weekend storm.

As we get closer to the weekend, here is information for residents and what to expect during and after the storm.

  • Our public works crews are on standby, and equipment is serviced and ready to be mobilized if necessary. Staff will be monitoring weather and road conditions during the storm event, and will be ready to clear trees, branches, and other debris from roadways. However, staff will not be put in harm's way and work will only be completed if and when it is safe. For example, if a downed tree is blocking a street, it may not be removed until the storm subsides or until it is safe to do so.
  • The after hours number should be used for Public Works emergencies that occur WITHIN THE TOWN. 1-833-460-8709 (leave a detailed message)
  • Power outages should be reported to NSP
  • Flooding on streets and on private properties (including sewer backups) may occur when the town's infrastructure is at/near capacity. Sometimes nothing can be done in these instances except to wait until rain intensity decreases.
  • Intersections with traffic lights that are not functioning should be approached as a 4-way stop (even if temporary stop signs are not erected).
  • Do not haul branches/debris to the roadside.
  • Do not park on the street.
  • Transit service has been cancelled for tomorrow.
  • If you have an emergency, call 911.

As the storm hits, please stay home and stay safe. Do not venture out unless absolutely necessary. This includes staying off the streets and sidewalks for a time after the storm has passed. If there are downed trees and branches, crews need room to do their job and do it safely. This includes NSP crews that may be trying to re-establish power.
