For over 10 years, Ceramic Village has been the go-to spot for paint-your-own ceramics and craft supplies. Shelves upon shelves of unpainted ceramic figurines give you almost every option imaginable. On the off chance you can’t find what you want, Ceramic Village will be more than happy to special-order it for you.
Claire Usher, the owner of Ceramic Village, offers classes for both adults and children, believing that everyone, regardless of age, can find joy in artistic expression. She sees everyone from complete beginners to seasoned painters come into her store, but regardless of skill level they all leave with a sense of accomplishment and their own piece of ceramic art.
What’s your signature product?
Definitely the ceramics, as well as the supplies like brushes and paints that go along with them. However, we also have painted outdoor woodwork that we sell – decorative wooden figurines, such as Santa Claus and reindeer to be used at Christmas time, or signs for family names. Additionally we do flower arrangements for tombstones, and we sell boxes and packing supplies.
How did you get started?
My husband actually bought the business for me. I used to do a lot of work with the Special Olympics and I ran a small option home, so I was always very busy. Art was my hobby and way of relaxing. He knew that I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I were at home all the time so he bought me this business as a way to merge my hobby and my need to be working. I just love it.
What inspires you to do what you do?
I just really love art, and I’ve learned a lot about art through having this business. My favourite part though has to be the kids. I just love seeing their faces light up.
